Excellent Pet Dental Care In Citrus Heights, CA
Importance of Pet Dental Care
Good oral health is key to the overall well-being of your furry friends. Believe it or not, PREVENTION of periodontal disease is one of the single most important things you can do to maintain health and affect the lifespan of your beloved companion.
ur well-experienced team is passionate about educating clients when it comes to preventing patient suffering. Infection in the mouth, including gingivitis and periodontitis is BY FAR the MOST common infection we see in dogs and cats in our practice.
Neglecting to take care of your pet’s teeth and mouth is not just a “bad breath” problem. Failing to pay attention to oral care from a young age quickly leads to infected and inflamed gums, called gingivitis. Unaddressed gingivitis can quickly lead to chronic pain, even in a young animal. As gingivitis progresses to periodontal disease, the whole body starts to suffer the effects of bacteria entering the bloodstream from the mouth. This condition can lead to organ diseases such as kidney disease and heart disease which owners often wrongly attribute to “old age”. Periodontal disease can make endocrine diseases such as diabetes mellitus harder to control. It can also exacerbate dementia, and so many other health problems.
Remember, bad breath is not normal, and old age is not a disease!
Our Pet Dental Services
Like you and I, our four-legged family members should have daily oral care. By brushing or wiping your pets’ teeth daily and removing plaque, you have the opportunity to catch abnormalities like bad breath or a broken tooth immediately. Besides daily oral care at home, pets should have routine dental examinations under anesthesia with cleaning that includes scaling and polishing every 6 months, and they should have a full set of dental X-rays every year. We are proud to offer comprehensive pet dental services to ensure your furry friends have a healthy and happy life.
We perform what is called a “COHAT”. This stand for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. Our skilled veterinarians perform thorough oral assessments, identifying issues such as gum inflammation, gingival recession, abnormal tooth wear, foreign bodies (such as hair or foxtails), periodontal problems, broken teeth, and even mouth tumors. Unlike humans, cavities are not a common problem for our four-legged companions; while they can occur, most of the real issues are BELOW the gum line and out of our sight. Commonly, gingivitis leads to everyday oral bacteria gaining access to structure below the gum line, and even gaining access to the porous tooth root. Once this happens, bacteria gets inside the tooth and can lead to painful tooth root abscesses that are completely hidden from our eyes. Sometimes we can ONLY see these problems with dental X-ray which is why it is so vitally important to use this type of imaging to look at every tooth root every year.
Our doctors and staff are committed to keeping up with modern dental practices to uphold the best quality oral care for pets. Through regular continuing education and training, we are able to utilize modern anesthesia and dental techniques including local blocks to numb affected areas in the mouth during a procedure. All of our dental patients benefit from our state-of-the-art anesthetic machines, anesthesia monitoring equipment, patient warming, individualized fluid therapy and full-mouth digital dental radiography.
From routine cleanings to complicated surgical extractions and oral tumor removal, we cover a broad range of dental needs for dogs and cats alike. We’re not just about fixing immediate problems; instead, we emphasize preventive care that includes educating pet owners on home dental care tailored to each specific patient.
